Tom Hanno - Tom's Reviews
The Bop Kings is the side project of Casey Miller (Vocals, Acoustic Guitar) of Barnyard Stompers, and is rounded out by Mike Nesloney on vocals and electric guitar, Johnny Mendez on upright bass, and drummer Megan Wise. The quartet have just released a new album full of alt-country/rockabilly music that will appeal to fans of 1950's era rock n roll. That album is self-titled and was released on February 7th. 2023.
I have always despised modern country, with its beer, tractors, and hard life lyrics that never come across with any legitimacy. That being said, I love the early eras of guys like Johnny Cash Jerry Lee Lewis and Elvis, as well as bands like The Stray Cats, which is where I find that The Bop Kings have pulled influence from particularly the country elements.
"Goin' to Meet the Devil" starts off with a bluesy Robert Johnson section, which soon changes into what the rest of this album sounds like, 50s rock and roll with Johnny Cash feel. This song was a wise choice to open with, as its upbeat feel gets people interested, and the rest of the album keeps them so.
"Blue Moon Bop" has that early Elvis vibe to the vocal performances and guitars, but I also hear Johnny Cash in there. This track is extremely catchy, and kinda reminds me of "Rock Around The Clock" by Bill Haley and the Comets".
"'59 Black Cadillac" has a Brian Setzer/Stray Cats sound, particularly within the vocal performances. The guitar parts have a rockabilly and blues foundation, and provide a very nice groove that runs the entirety of the song. This is probably my favorite track on the album.
"I Should Have Left You" is another amazing tune, both musically and lyrically. I think anyone alive will relate to the song's topic; I know that I did as there are several women that I should have left long before I actually did. The music is early rock and roll and country inspired, and is very memorable.
Other standouts include "Faded Jeans" and "Clouds and Silver Linings"
As I listened to the album it became very apparent that The Bop Kings wear their influences on their sleeves, as these songs often bear a striking resemblance to bands of the past; but this isn't necessarily a bad thing. I enjoyed that I could pick out the artists that I'm familiar with, and I'd imagine there's more in there that I am not aware of.
I recommend The Bop Kings of you're into the music that reminds you of '57 Chevys, slicked back, greasy hair, and playing "back seat bingo" with your "classy chassis" while parked at the "passion pit", so get at it, Daddy-O, and follow the link in the comments to hear it for yourselves.
