We didn't know any better so we just called each other family

At 14, I headed out and started wreaking havoc on the land
I started smoking, drinking, got tattooed and joined the world's worst punk rock band
But deep down inside, I knew I couldn't hide
From the loneliness I'd come to understand
And the fact that I'd not yet become a man

Poor white trash farmers and rednecks make up my family tree
And poor white trash outlaws are all I suppose we'll ever be
Papa said goodbye, mama did try
We didn't know any better so we just called each other family

At 15, I quit schooling and started looting houses to get by
At 16, I was arrested - Me and my brother robbed an all night Stop'n'Buy
I sold some Mary Jane, LSD and cocaine and by 17, I was broke and so alone, I begged the Lord to let me die

At 20, I had 20 pounds of Mexican and an ounce of pure cocaine
I drove my pickup out west to meet up with my daddy in Spokane
We sold that weed together and I headed back to Dallas to settle in
And all the way I wondered how a life with a papa might have been
